INAUAGURATION OF THE PRE HOSPITAL EMERGENCY CARE (AMBULANCE MANAGEMENT) TRAINING FOR DOCTORS AND NURSES
Health Emergency and Disaster Management Training Center (HEDMaTC), Faculty of Medicine, Peradeniya in collaboration with the South Australian Paramedics Abroad (SAPA) is currently conducting workshops on pre hospital emergency care (Ambulance studies) for nurses, ambulance drivers and doctors from the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka in August 2013. The nurses program which will be held for 7 days was inaugurated on the 12th of August 2013 by Prof M. D. Lamawansa, Dean, Faculty of Medicine. The ambulance drivers will join the nurses on the last two days of the program where they will learn the role they can play in transporting critically ill patients. The 2 day Doctors program will be held on the 22nd and 23rd of August 2013.
HEDMaTC is working in close collaboration with SAPA since the inception in 2005 and they provide their expertise free of charge. Visiting us for the 8th time is Mr. David Stevenson, the president of SAPA and Mr. Frank Atkinson for the 3rd time since 2005. They are accompanied this time by Ms. Margaret White and Ms. Pat Thomas. Their services are highly appreciated by HEDMaTC and the Faculty of Medicine.
 
 
Pre Hospital Emergency Care (Ambulance Studies) Training Unit

Pre-hospital emergency care training programs are conducted by this unit of the HEDMaTC as a joint venture between South Australian Paramedics Abroad and Help Sri Lanka – South Australia Incorporated. 

The aim of these training programs is to impart awareness and knowledge to, clinicians, nurses and paramedical staff on pre-hospital emergency care.

The long-term goal of the program is to develop a centre of expertise for pre-hospital emergency care training at the Faculty of Medicine and to establish an emergency care ambulance service in the Kandy district.  This establishment could further offer training and assistance to other areas of the country
 

Specific Objectives

    • Develop a Pre hospital Emergency Care Training Program for health personnel
    • Plan and carryout seminars and workshops on Pre-hospital Emergency Care to increase the knowledge of identified individuals
    • Conduct a post graduate courses on Pre-hospital Emergency Care
    • Promote research on Pre-hospital Emergency Care 
    • To develop regional and international links in the area of Pre-hospital Emergency Care
    • To Establish a Pre-hospital Emergency Care Ambulance Service

Injury Research Unit

To promote, conduct and utilize education and research for the prevention and control of Injuries and their management.

Specific Objectives
1.   To plan and carry out courses, seminars and workshops on accidental Injuries.
      2.   Establish programs in accidental injury prevention
      3.   Promotion of research on Road Traffic Injury prevention
      4.   To develop regional and international links in the area of RTI prevention.

A Road Traffic Injuries Research Network (RTIRN) was established in September 2005, by a Memorandum of Understanding with the Board of the Road Traffic Injury Research Network and the University of Peradeniya.
