Overview

The department first started as a teaching unit for undergraduate medical students of the University of   Peradeniya Sri Lanka. The staff in its inception was mainly histopathologists.

As such the clinical laboratory component was predominantly histopathology in the early years and serviced many hospitals in the country regarding surgical pathology.

Over the past 50 years- the department has expanded in to haematopathology as well.

At present the branch of chemical pathology is also being developed.

The department has a well established immuno histochemistry and immuno fluorescence laboratory for   enhanced diagnostic work.

Presently we are establishing a muscle histochemistry and immuno histochemistry laboratory. The department continues to offer specialized laboratory services to several hospitals in the country with  regard to histopathology and haematology.  The department conducts all undergraduate courses in         pathology. Training postgraduate students in pathology for the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine,   Sri Lanka is another major contribution by the department. The department houses a large museum of pathological specimens, which is extensively used by students of pathology.  The specimens are also used for exhibitions viewed by the general public.
