An international round table conference on elder care was held at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya on the 20th December 2013. This conference was jointly organized by Prof Chandrika Jayasinghe,School of Advanced Medical Sciences, faculty of Medicine and Prof Kalinga Tudor Silva, Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya. Mrs Emelda Sukumar, secretary, ministry of Social services and Prof Yoshihide Obayashi, from the Department of Global Health and Epidemiology, Hokkaido University were among the participants who represented many governmental and non governmental organizations concerned on elder care, such as Ministry of Health, Central Province ministry of health, National Institute of social development and the Kandy Friend in need society .

A temporary office which was established to commence the work of the proposed ‘School of Advanced Medical Sciences’ of the Faculty of Medicine was declared opened by Prof Athula Senaratne, the Vice Chancellor University of Peradeniya on the 3rd January 2014, which happened to be the 52nd birthday of the faculty of Medicine.
