An academic elective offered through the Centre for Research in Tropical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, providing students with clinical, field-based, and museum-based exposure to infectious diseases and tropical medicine.
The elective course focuses on common and important infectious diseases encountered in tropical settings. Students will gain exposure to patient-based clinical learning, structured academic discussions, expert-led lectures, field-level disease control activities
The course is suitable for students who wish to strengthen their understanding of tropical medicine, infectious disease diagnosis, disease prevention, and public health approaches in tropical regions.
Through this elective course, students will be able to:
Students will participate in ward rounds and case-based discussions related to tropical diseases. These sessions provide clinical exposure to the presentation, diagnosis, investigation, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases commonly encountered in Sri Lanka.
Lectures will cover selected topics in infectious diseases and tropical medicine, including disease transmission, clinical features, diagnostic approaches, management principles, prevention strategies, and public health relevance.
The field visit allows students to observe tropical disease-related public health activities in real-world settings. This provides practical exposure to disease surveillance, prevention programmes, vector control activities, and community-level health interventions.
The museum visit provides students with an opportunity to observe preserved specimens, parasite life cycles, vectors, and disease-related teaching materials. This session supports visual and practical understanding of parasitic diseases and their relevance in tropical medicine.
