Visit of teams from University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and Sivananthan Laboratories (SVL) to the University of Peradeniya, from 14th to 18th October 2024

Two teams from the UIC and SVL visited the University of Peradeniya to discuss further the tripartite collaborative initiatives and expand on the partnerships in health sciences.

The UIC team comprised of,

  8. Prof. Guido Pauli, College of Pharmacy, Director/ Pharmacognosy Institute, UIC
  9. Prof. Carlos Crespo, Dean, College of Applied Health Sciences, UIC

The SVL team comprised of,

  1. Prof. Siva Sivananthan
  2. Dr. Inthumathy Sivananthan
  3. Assistant Prof. Aranee Sivananthan
  4. Ms. Cynthia Deters

The University of Peradeniya organized the local arrangements for the UIC delegates, coordinated by Prof. Susiji Wickramasinghe. Vice-Chancellor, Prof WMT Madhujith, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof RW Pallegama, Prof. Lalani Yatawara (Dean/AHS), Prof. Saman Nananyakkara (Dean/Medicine), Prof. Vasanthi Pinto (Former Dean, Medicine), Prof. MD Lamawansa (Former Vice-Chancellor) and Dr. Thilini Anupama contributed to the local arrangements and Ms. Hiruni Thiloka coordinated some of the activities on behalf of SVL.

UIC delegation attended the medical education seminar held at the University Grants Commission (UGC), Ward Place, Colombo 07, on 14th October. Deans and medical educationist from all Medical Faculties in Sri Lanka attended the meeting.

The seminar on medical education at the UGC explores multiple dimensions of modernizing the medical curriculum, emphasizing internationalization, and the critical role of hospitals in training, research, and management. Discussions focus on optimizing hospital resources for both clinical care and academic research, ensuring the effective development of teaching faculty, and utilizing clinical simulation for hands-on learning. A key element is supporting students through competency-based and student-centered learning activities, fostering deep partnerships, and integrating AI, digital tools, and electronic health records into medical training.

Special activities carried out by the visiting team members at the University of Peradeniya

  1. A medical education workshop was held with participants from the Faculties of Medicine, Allied Health Sciences, Dental Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences.
  2. Meetings were held with groups from UIC, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences to initiate multidisciplinary research collaborations on:
    • Immunology
    • Surgery
    • Mental Health
    • Stroke Care
    • Medical Education
    • Biostatistics
    • Physiotherapy
    • Pharmacy
  3. In addition, UIC team visited the Teaching Hospitals, Kandy, Peradeniya and Asiri Hospital. And separate meetings were held with teams from the Faculties of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine to review the progress of their collaboration with UIUC.
