The Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, extends its heartfelt gratitude and best wishes to Professor M.D. Lamawansa, who retired from active service on 31st October 2025, after an illustrious career marked by excellence in teaching, research, clinical service, and visionary academic leadership.

A Chair Professor of Surgery and Consultant General and Paediatric Transplant Surgeon at the Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya, Prof. Lamawansa has rendered decades of dedicated service to the University and the nation. Over his distinguished career, he has held several key positions, including Head of the Department of Surgery, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Founder Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, and most notably, Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya.

He is a pioneer in paediatric kidney transplantation in Sri Lanka, a Past President of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka, and the current President of the SAARC Surgical Care Society. His contributions extended beyond academia, serving as the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation, where he strengthened international collaboration in education, health, and diplomacy.

Several special farewell ceremonies were held to honour Prof. Lamawansa's remarkable service and achievements. Colleagues, students, and staff gathered to express their deep appreciation for his inspiring leadership, tireless dedication, and lasting impact on the University community.

The Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, proudly acknowledges Prof. Lamawansa's invaluable contributions and enduring legacy. We wish him a happy, healthy, and fulfilling retirement, filled with new adventures and cherished memories.
