Symposium on Tuberculosis 2026
The Center for Research in Tropical Medicine (CRTM), Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, successfully conducted the Symposium on Tuberculosis 2026 on 6 August 2026 at the Faculty Boardroom, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya.
The symposium was held under the theme: "Tuberculosis in the 21st Century: An Old Disease with New Challenges"
The event brought together healthcare professionals which included pre-interns, nurses and medical officers interested in strengthening their knowledge of tuberculosis, including its clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and public-health implications.
The symposium featured lectures delivered by two experts in respiratory medicine and tuberculosis control:
- Prof. Duminda Yasaratne - Consultant Respiratory Physician, Teaching Hospital Peradeniya, and Professor in Respiratory Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya
- Dr. Ishani Mawlimada - District Tuberculosis Control Officer, District Chest Clinic, Kandy
The sessions covered a broad range of important topics, including common and atypical presentations of tuberculosis, its pathogenesis and transmission, the diagnosis of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis, interpretation of commonly used investigations, modern treatment strategies, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, and current approaches to prevention and public health.
The symposium provided participants with a comprehensive and clinically relevant understanding of tuberculosis, while also emphasizing the continuing challenges posed by the disease in the 21st century.
