Department of Microbiology Hosts Seminar on Hantavirus and Other Zoonotic Viruses
The Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, successfully hosted the seminar "Hantavirus and Other Zoonotic Viruses: Global Insights and Sri Lankan Perspectives" on 16 July 2026. The event featured distinguished speakers including Prof. Shuzo Urata (Department of Emerging Infectious Diseases, Nagasaki University, Japan), Prof. Kumiko Yoshimatsu (Institute for Genetic Medicine, Hokkaido University, Japan), and Dr. Devinda Muthusinghe (National Research Center, Nagasaki University, Japan), with the session chaired by Prof. Nilanthi Dissanayake, Department of Microbiology, University of Peradeniya. The seminar provided participants with comprehensive insights into rodent-borne zoonotic viruses, covering global advances in hantavirus research, mechanisms of disease, surveillance strategies, laboratory diagnosis, and the current epidemiological situation in Sri Lanka. The interactive discussions fostered knowledge exchange and highlighted the importance of international collaboration, research, and public health preparedness in addressing emerging infectious diseases.
