Historic Success: Faculty of Medicine Leads Landmark Conjoined Twins Separation

A landmark surgery separating five-year-old conjoined twins joined at the pelvis was successfully performed on 10th June 2026 by a multidisciplinary team led by academics of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. The two-year plan included a crucial 2024 kidney repositioning procedure, enabled by the Faculty's pioneering expertise in paediatric renal transplantation. The final 10-hour separation, with nearly 14 hours of anaesthesia, involved 15 specialists from Teaching Hospital Peradeniya and Sirimavo Bandaranaike Specialised Children's Hospital, supported by theatre and ICU teams. The children recovered remarkably, marking a proud milestone for Peradeniya academics and Sri Lankan healthcare.
