Symposium on Snake Bite 2026 - The Center for Research in Tropical Medicine (CRTM)

The Center for Research in Tropical Medicine (CRTM), Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, successfully conducted the Symposium on Snake Bite 2026 on 21st May 2026 at the Faculty Boardroom, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya.

The symposium focused on the theme:
"Snakebite Envenomation: From Ecology and Venom Biology to Clinical Management."

The event brought together medical officers, postgraduate trainees, and healthcare professionals from multiple disciplines including Medicine, Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia and Critical Care, and Allied Health Sciences.

The symposium featured lectures delivered by three distinguished experts and proud alumni of the University of Peradeniya:

  • Prof. S.A.M. Kularatne - Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya
    Topic: "Overview on Snakes and Snakebites"
  • Prof. Anjana Silva - Chair Professor of Parasitology, Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka
    Topic: "Snake Venom and Its Effects"
  • Prof. Namal Rathnayaka - Professor in Toxicology and Medical Toxicologist, Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka
    Topic: "Management of Snake Bites"

All three speakers are distinguished alumni of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya and pioneers in the field of snakebite research, venom biology, toxicology, and clinical management of Sri Lanka.

The sessions provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of snakebite envenomation, covering aspects from snake ecology and venom biology to evidence-based clinical management strategies.

CRTM extends its sincere gratitude to all speakers, participants, and organizing committee members who contributed towards the success of this event.
