The Inaugural Meeting of the Multidisciplinary Artificial Intelligence Satellite Research Center for Healthcare and Well-being
The Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, organized the Inaugural Meeting of the Multidisciplinary Artificial Intelligence Satellite Research Center for Healthcare and Well-being held on 8th October 2025 at the faculty boardroom, which was a landmark event that took artificial intelligence research to new heights within the healthcare field.
The program began with the customary lighting of the oil lamp, signifying the start of this prestigious academic venture. The welcoming speech was given by Dr. Thilanka Seneviratne, Lead at the Multidisciplinary AI Satellite Research Centre, who elaborated on the vision and future direction of AI in health care and medical education.
Prof. Janaka Ekanayaka, the director of the Multidisciplinary Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (MARC), made a statement to the attendees on the significance of cross-disciplinary cooperation and creativity. Prof. Saman Nanayakkara, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, delivered another speech at the event, reiterating the faculty’s dedication to encouraging research and international cooperation.
The event was further enriched by the guest lecture delivered by Prof. Yoo Soo Park from the University of Illinois, who shared valuable insights into international advancements in AI and medical education. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of all participants and organizers.
The event featured a number of accomplished academic personalities such as Prof. Lamawansa (Former Vice Chancellor), Prof. Vasanti Pinto (Former Dean), and Prof. Kosala Marambe (Head of Medical Education, Faculty of Medicine).
More important still, the national participation of several state universities, such as Wayamba University, Sabaragamuwa University, University of Jaffna, and University of Kelaniya, indicated a high level of academic involvement in this program. In regard to international participation, we can note such prominent academics as Prof. Ara Tekian, Associate Dean of International Education, Prof. Yoo Soo Park, and Dr. Brian Jim from the University of Illinois.
This inaugural meeting laid a strong foundation for future collaborative research, innovation, and knowledge exchange in the field of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
