FOR PATIENTS

  1. Blood sugar
  2. FBS (Fasting Blood Sugar)
    • For a fasting blood sugar test, do not eat or drink anything other than water for at least 8 hours before taking the blood sample.
    • If you have diabetes, you may be asked to wait until you have had your blood tested before you take your morning dose of insulin or diabetes medicine.

    PPBS (Post Prandial Blood Sugar)
    • You will need to eat an average meal (containing approximately 100 grams of carbohydrates) prior to having your blood drawn. You do not need to fast before eating the meal. You may come to the laboratory before eating, or you may eat at home and then come to the lab.
    • Please note the time that you start eating your meal and be sure to finish it within 30 minutes. You must have your blood drawn exactly two (2) hours after your first bite of food.
    • You need to take your usual diabetic medications (tablets or insulin) as prescribed

    OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test)
    • You will need to have your normal diet and normal activity for 3 days. Do not eat or drink anything other than water for at least 8 hours before the test. After taking the 1st blood sample 75g of glucose is given dissolved in 200 ml of water. 2nd blood sample is taken 30 minutes after glucose. Another 3 samples will be taken at 30-minute intervals until 2 hours. The patient should wait in the laboratory till the test is over.

    HbA1C
    • No special preparation or fasting is needed

  3. Lipid profile
    • You will need to have overnight fasting (minimum 12 hours) prior to collecting blood for the lipid profile

  4. Other biochemical testing (AST, ALT, Serum Creatinine) and haematological testing (FBC, ESR)
    • No special preparation needed

  5. Urine Full report
    • Wash your hands properly to ensure they are clean. Remove the cup lid carefully and set it down with the inner surface up. Refrain from touching the inside of the container.
    • Clean the area around your genitals with water. Allow an initial stream of urine to pass for a few seconds, and then collect approximately 50 ml of midstream urine by placing the collection cup into the urine stream, making sure not to touch the cup to your genital area.
    • Close the lid and immediately hand it over to the laboratory
