NATIONAL TRAINING COURSE IN INTEGRATING SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH SERVICES IN CRISES |
|
Even after conducting many disaster management workshops since 2005, we at HEDMaTC had not understood the need for Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) in Crises to be addressed as a separate issue. When the UNFPA approached us with the idea of conducting a programme in SRH, we considered ourselves privileged to be associated with them in this timely effort. The First National Training Course in Integrating Sexual and Reproductive Health Services in Crises was organized, therefore, to address the opportune need of caring for women and children in crisis situation in the North of Sri Lanka with the guidance, technical support and generous funding of the UNFPA. This venture was supported by the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition, Sri Lanka.
On completion of ten successful SRH programs we have trained 255 medical officers Island wide. Each program targeted on training different groups such as officers of NGOs/INGOs, middle level administration officers of Ministry of Health, University lecturers, Medical Officers, Medical officers of Maternal and Child Health, Regional Epidemiologists, Medical Officers in the clinics of Sexually Transmitted Disease, officers in the Disaster Management Centre etc.
In every program each participant was given a bag and a folder containing the handouts for each session and the group workstations. The color scheme of blue and orange for all the course material and accessories was chosen in appreciation of the colors of the logo of the funding agency. Guidelines and manuals to be distributed among the participants were provided by the International Planned Parenthood Foundation, Malaysia. All Reproductive Health Kits necessary for the group workstations were donated by the UNFPA.
HEDMaTC is conducting one-day, two-day and three-day residential SRH training programs and every program has been conducted in 3 star hotels with the fullest support of the funding agency. Since 2009, 11 SRH programs have been conducted by HEDMaTC. |
