Academic Staff

Dr. S.P.M. Peiris, MBBS, MD (Surgery), MRCS (Eng), is Senior Lecturer and current Head of the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. His clinical and research interests include general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, breast cancer, and medical databases. He is deeply involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, surgical skills training, and trainee supervision, while providing comprehensive surgical care.

Prof. A.U.B. Pethiyagoda, MBBS, MS, FRCS (Glasgow), FRCS (Edinburgh), is a senior Professor in Urology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, with over three decades of dedication to medical education and patient care. He is deeply passionate about advancing urology through teaching, research, and clinical excellence. His research interests include andrology, prostatitis, urolithiasis, lower urinary tract and prostate problems, and male factor subfertility. Prof. Pethiyagoda has been teaching undergraduates since 1992 and postgraduates since 1998, while providing specialized care through urology and andrology clinics and surgery. He remains actively engaged in professional bodies and lifelong learning.

Prof. Arinda Dharmapala, MBBS, MS, FRCS (Eng), is Professor in Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. A specialist in general surgery, his clinical and research interests focus on hepatobiliary , Pancreatic surgery and liver transplants . He is actively involved in general gastrointestinal and hepato-pancreatico- biliary surgical services and is dedicated to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching through clinical instruction, ward classes, lectures, and workshops. Prof. Dharmapala currently serves as President of the Kandy Society of Medicine and as a Council Member of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka.

Prof. A.K.B.B.T.B. Samarasinghe, MBBS (Colombo) MD (Colombo), is Professor in Surgery and Head of the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. He has specialized in general surgery, vascular and transplant surgery with research interests in paediatric transplant surgery and vascular surgery. He is actively involved in general, vascular, and gastrointestinal surgical services. Prof. Samarasinghe is committed to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching through clinical instruction, ward rounds, lectures, and seminars, while maintaining active engagement in professional surgical bodies.

Dr. R.M.J.B.S. Rathnayake, MBBS, MD , is a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. He is passionate about general, vascular, and transplant surgery, with a strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training. His research interests focus on vascular and general surgery, and he is currently a PhD reader.

Dr. Mathula Hettiarachchi, MBBS, MD(Surgery), MRCS (Eng), is a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon and Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, and practices at Sirimavo Bandaranaike Specialized Children’s Hospital in Kandy. He is dedicated to advancing surgical care for children through clinical excellence, research, and teaching, with broad expertise in pediatric surgical conditions and minimally invasive techniques. Passionate about training future surgeons and improving child health outcomes.

Dr. Buddhika Dassanayake, MBBS, MD, is a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. He has extensive experience in undergraduate teaching, including roles as a temporary lecturer in Physiology and a visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. Dr. Dassanayake is actively involved in clinical teaching through ward rounds, lectures, and seminars. His interests extend beyond medicine to writing and journalism, art and art history, photography, and music, reflecting a broad academic and creative engagement.

Dr. Kaushika Gunasekara, MBBS, MD, MRCP, FMAS, is a Lecturer in Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, and a Consultant General Surgeon at the Teaching Hospital Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. He is passionate about surgical education, clinical excellence, and advancing care in colorectal and general surgical conditions. Dr. Gunasekara actively participates in clinical teaching, skills workshops, and research, including topics such as colorectal cancer and cancer screening strategies. He contributes to training future surgeons and improving surgical patient outcomes.

Dr. Thilina Samarasinghe, MBBS, MD, MRCS, FMAS , is a dedicated Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, and a Board Certified Urological Surgeon. He completed his local urological training at the Institute of Urology and Nephrology, National Hospital of Sri Lanka. He completed advanced fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic urology including stone and prostate surgery in Melbourne, Australia.
His main research interest include laparoscopic and robotic urological surgery and is passionate to establish and develop robotic surgery in Sri Lanka. He is committed to clinical excellence, surgical education, and research in urology and is actively involved in teaching and skill development for both undergraduates and postgraduates. Dr. Samarasinghe has been awarded the prestigious Dr. Noel Bartholomeusz Prize by the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka in 2021. He is also a double gold medalist in both the Final MBBS(2014) as well as MD Surgery(2020) examinations. He strives to advance patient care, education, and academic scholarship and is also keen on collaborative research.

Dr. Kasun Herath, MBBS, MD, MRCS (Glas), is a Lecturer in Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, and Consultant in GI Surgery. He is passionate about minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery, bariatric surgery surgical oncology, and clinical research, with multiple case-based publications. Dr. Herath is committed to excellence in surgical education, patient care, and training future surgeons in advanced operative techniques.

Dr. Himasha Narampanawa, MBBS, is a Lecturer (Probationary) in Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, committed to excellence in surgical education and clinical practice. She contributes to undergraduate teaching, clinical ward rounds, and seminars, and supports skills development for future surgeons. Passionate about Plastic and reconstructive surgery and patient care, Dr. Narampanawa actively engages in professional development and academic activities within the department.
