To mark Restart a Heart Month in October, the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, conducted a Basic Life Support workshop within the Faculty premises on 15 and 16 October 2026. The event was organised by Dr. Ashani Rathnayake and Temporary Lecturers Dr. Nethmi Kiridana and Dr. Abdhullah Nawas together with Prof. Vasanthi Pinto, Prof. Saman Nanayakkara, Dean of the Faculty and Dr. Senani Samarasinghe, Head of the Department. Approximately 1,000 schoolchildren from 14 schools across the Kandy District attended the workshop. The workshop comprised of videos and a brief lecture on cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), log-rolling maneuvers and placing in recovery position, followed by hands-on CPR and choking sessions. The children received certificates in recognition of their enthusiastic participation in the workshop.

The workshop equipped students with the skills to identify emergencies, seek assistance and carry out basic life-saving interventions ensuring a generation ready to act where every second counts. See More 

The Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, conducted a Basic Life Support workshop at Girls’ High School, Kandy, on the 2nd of October 2026. The event was organised by Dr. Ashani Rathnayake and Temporary Lecturers Dr. Nethmi Kiridana and Dr. Abdhullah Nawas together with Prof. Vasanthi Pinto, Prof. Saman Nanayakkara, Dean of the Faculty and Dr. Senani Samarasinghe, Head of the Department with support from the school’s Old Girls’ Association. The workshop trained students to recognize emergency situations, call for help and perform basic life-saving interventions.

On 13th September, the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care at Teaching Hospital Peradeniya successfully organized World Sepsis Day activities. An awareness lecture was conducted for doctors at both THP and the Dental Hospital, emphasizing early recognition and management of sepsis. The program highlighted the key message of the Global Sepsis Alliance, stressing that sepsis is preventable and treatable with timely action. The event drew active participation, fostering meaningful discussions and renewed commitment to sepsis awareness. Overall, the initiative was a massive success, uniting healthcare professionals in the fight against sepsis.
