The Electronic Information Resource Centre (E-Library) was conceived as a pivotal project to support the self-learning ethos of the new curriculum. The foundation was laid in 2003 with generous funding from the University Grants Commission (UGC). Under the direct supervision of Dean Prof. A.S.B. Wijekoon, construction commenced swiftly to ensure that the evolving educational needs of medical students were fully supported.

The E-Library was officially declared open on 13th January 2005 by Prof. Kapila Goonasekara, then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya.

The success of the E-Library project was the result of visionary leadership and cross-departmental collaboration:

• Prof. A.S.B. Wijekoon – Dean, Faculty of Medicine (Project Lead)
• Dr. Nimal Rathnayake – Director, ICSU, Faculty of Engineering
• Dr. Thilak Jayalath – Chairman, Computer Committee and first Head of E-Library
• Mr. Herath – Network Engineer
• Mr. U.S.K. Ekanayake and Mr. G.A.B. Weerasekara – Technical Supervisors
• Mrs. Kusum Kongahakotuwa – Assistant Registrar (Administrative Oversight)
• Mr. C. Amarakoon – Assistant Bursar (Financial Management)

Their combined efforts laid the groundwork for a resource that continues to evolve with time.
