Academic Staff

Prof. Manoji Pathirage, MBBS, MD (Medicine), is Professor in Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. She is the Head of the department of Medicine and Family Medicine. An accomplished clinician–academic, his research interests include neurology and neuro-rehabilitation, stroke, tropical and infectious diseases, geriatrics, and rheumatology. She has received multiple national research awards from the Sri Lanka Medical Association for impactful clinical studies and presidential research awards for internationally cited work. Prof. Pathirage has undertaken advanced training in neurology in Australia and contributes actively to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research, and professional leadership through national and international medical associations.

Dr. Sachitra Abeykoon, is a dedicated Lecturer in the Department of Family Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, contributing to the development of the newly established Family Medicine programme and undergraduate clinical education. She is engaged in community-oriented research, including public health and clinical studies presented at national research symposia. Dr. Abeykoon actively participates in multidisciplinary projects alongside colleagues across departments, reflecting her commitment to evidence-based primary care and preventive medicine. Her academic involvement supports training future physicians in holistic, patient-centred care within community and primary health settings.

Dr. Tharuka Athapattu, is a dedicated Lecturer (Probationary) in Family Medicine at the Department of Family Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, contributing to the newly established Family Medicine programme with his diverse clinical experience across primary care, general medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology, emergency medicine, critical care and experience in clinical administration and coordination of healthcare services.
Dr. Athapattu is actively involved in undergraduate teaching and clinical rotations in Family Medicine, with particular interest in primary care–based clinical skills, patient-centred consultation, and holistic care. He also contributes to clinical appointment coordination and academic activities within the department. His academic interests include strengthening primary care education, conducting family health research in collaboration with faculty colleagues and improving quality of care in community and family practice settings.
