Academic Staff
Prof. M.C. Gihan, MBBS, MD, MRCOG (UK), Dip. Adv. Gynaecological Laparoscopy (France), is Professor and current Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, and a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. A former Deputy Proctor of the Faculty, he has held numerous academic and administrative responsibilities. His clinical and research interests focus on infertility and advanced gynaecological laparoscopic surgery, and he is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research supervision, and faculty governance.
Prof. Chathura Ratnayake, MBBS (Colombo), MS (Ob Gyn), FRCOG (UK), is Chair Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. An accomplished clinician–academic, his research focuses on reproductive toxicology, preterm labour, fetal surveillance, and perinatal infections. Prof. Ratnayake is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education, clinical leadership, and research dissemination, including digital education through academic media platforms. He continues to contribute to advancing maternal–fetal care and evidence-based obstetric practice nationally and regionally.
Prof. K.I.C. Kandauda, MBBS, MD, MRCOG, is Professor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. His academic and clinical interests focus on antenatal care and post-reproductive health. Prof. Kandauda has served as a Senior Lecturer and holds key roles in professional and social service organizations, including the Royal College and College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Kandy Society of Medicine, and the Peradeniya Medical School Alumni Association, contributing actively to education, governance, and community engagement.
Prof. S.A. Karunananda, MBBS (Hons), MS (O&G), CAES (UK), MROG (UK), is a Professor in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the Faculty of Medicine, former head of the department ,University of Peradeniya. With expertise in laparoscopic surgery and endometrial pathology, he has contributed to regional and international research, including case reports and surgical technique studies. Passionate about advancing women’s health and minimally invasive gynaecological care, Prof. Karunananda is actively involved in teaching, clinical practice, and academic scholarship.
Dr. Sampath Gnanarathne, MBBS, MD, MRCOG (UK), Dip. Advanced Laparoscopy (Germany), is a Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, and a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Teaching Hospital Peradeniya. His clinical and research interests include minimally invasive gynaecology, endometriosis, and fetal imaging. He holds key academic leadership roles, contributes to national training programmes, and is actively engaged in teaching, research, and professional service.
Dr Neranja Anuradha Fonseka, MBBS, MD, obtained his MBBS degree from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, and completed his MD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, Sri Lanka. He is currently undertaking overseas training for board certification at University College Hospital London, United Kingdom.
His main areas of interest include fetal medicine, maternal medicine, and fetal genetics. His research interests focus on fetal growth restriction, fetal genetics, and prenatal diagnosis. Dr Fonseka is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and has contributed to numerous national academic and professional activities organised by the Family Health Bureau and the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists to improve maternal and fetal healthcare.
