Autonomic and Vascular Function Testing Laboratory
This facility was established at the Department of Physiology, with a view of providing good quality clinical services, improving teaching and enhancing research in the field of cardiovascular physiology.
At present, the laboratory has the facility to test cardiovascular autonomic functions using a battery of clinical tests. The autonomic function testing is carried out for both clinical and research purposes and for teaching undergraduates and postgraduates.
Facilities:
The laboratories are equipped with:
- Enraf - Nonius Tilt Table
- Power Lab (26T) (ADInstruments) data acquisition system with LabChart 8.0 software
- Accessories for monitoring ECG, Heart rate, Blood pressure, grip strength, Respiration and several other parameters
- Spirit treadmill – XT 68
- EDAN SA-10 Ambulatory blood pressure monitor
- A windows compatible desktop computer and printer

Clinical services:
Cardiac autonomic function testing is performed for the diagnosis, evaluation and management of patients with various clinical conditions:
- Newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Diabetes mellitus patients with autonomic symptoms
- Syncope
- Orthostatic hypotension
- Postural tachycardia
- Assessment of dysautonomia in patients with diagnosed Parkinson’s disease
Tests of autonomic function performed in the laboratory
- Head-up-tilt test
- Deep breathing test
- Valsalva maneuver
- Isometric handgrip test
- Assessment of Heart rate variability
- Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
Our research
- Autonomic functions and blood pressure variability in individuals with a family history of hypertension
- Developing normative data for cardiac autonomic functions for Sri Lankans
- Impact of testing position on Valsalva maneuver
- Vascular function in pregnancy and preeclampsia
