Academic Staff
Dr. Sayuri Perera, MBBS, MD, MRCPsych (UK), is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, and a Consultant Psychiatrist at Teaching Hospital Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, dedicated to advancing mental health care, education, and research. She leads clinical teaching, ward rounds, and seminars while actively engaging in psychiatric research on depression, addiction, and psychosocial interventions. Dr. Perera is passionate about improving mental wellbeing and training future psychiatrists through evidence-based practice and community outreach.
Prof. Thilini Rajapakse, MBBS, MD (Psychiatry), PhD, is Chair Professor of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. She is an internationally recognized academic psychiatrist with major research contributions in suicide, self-harm, and mood disorders, particularly within the Sri Lankan context. A former Head of the Department of Psychiatry, she has also served as Joint Editor of the Sri Lanka Journal of Psychiatry and held leadership roles in national professional bodies. Prof Rajapakse has published extensively in high-impact international journals and continues to influence mental health research, policy, and postgraduate training through scholarship, mentorship, and advocacy.
Prof. Dewasmika Ariyasinghe, MBBS, MD (Psychiatry), is Professor in Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. She obtained her MBBS from the University of Peradeniya, and her MD in Psychiatry from the University of Colombo. She also serves as an Honorary Specialist in Psychiatry at the Teaching Hospital Peradeniya. At present she is undertaking her PhD at the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, focusing on an easily implemented intervention for risky drinkers. Her other research interests include cognitive impairment in ageing and mental illness, and the cognitive effects of lithium therapy. She is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and serves as an examiner for multiple national medical universities and the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo (PGIM).
Dr. Vipula Wijesiri, MBBS, is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. He is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical training, and academic leadership within the department. Dr. Wijesiri is committed to advancing mental health education, strengthening psychiatric services, and contributing to research and professional development in psychiatry in Sri Lanka through teaching, mentorship, and service delivery.
Dr. Nilantha Balasooriya, functions as a lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry. She holds an MD in psychiatry from the University of Colombo and provides honorary services at the teaching hospital Peradeniya as a general adult psychiatrist. Her special interests include liaison psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. She also takes special interest in medical education and utilizing novel methods for teaching and training psychiatry skills.
Dr. Dilini Vidusha, MBBS, MD, is a Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. She is involved in undergraduate medical education and clinical teaching, contributing to ward-based learning, tutorials, and academic activities in psychiatry. Dr. Vidusha has a strong interest in mental health education and patient-centered psychiatric care and is committed to developing her academic and research profile while supporting training and service delivery in psychiatry.
Dr. Rasangi Adicaram, MBBS, MD (Psychiatry), is a Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, and a Consultant Psychiatrist. She is actively involved in undergraduate teaching, clinical training, and patient care, with a strong focus on evidence-based psychiatric practice. Dr. Adicaram contributes to ward teaching, tutorials, and academic activities, and is committed to advancing mental health services, education, and research in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Shanika Ekanayake, MBBS, MD (Psychiatry), is a Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, and a Consultant Psychiatrist. She is actively involved in undergraduate teaching, clinical training, and patient care, with a strong commitment to evidence-based psychiatric practice. Dr. Ekanayake contributes to academic activities, ward teaching, and professional development while engaging in research and service improvement in mental health care in Sri Lanka.
