Radiology has emerged as the cornerstone and an invaluable service to several specialties of medicine. It is an ever-evolving specialty with new developments occurring rapidly with advances in technology.
The specialty of Radiology was introduced to the Faculty of Medicine initially by the Department of Surgery considering the importance of having Radiology expertise for both undergraduate academic programme and the delivery of Radiological services at the Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya. The Radiology unit at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, was established in the year 2006. The Radiology unit was upgraded to the Department of Radiology in 2012 pioneered by Prof. Badra Hewavithana and Prof. Shanthini Rosairo, who deserve a special tribute.
The Department of Radiology of the Faculty of Medicine is unique in that it is the first department dedicated for Radiology in the national network of universities.It provides clinical teaching service and patient care services at the department of Radiology at the Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya which is affiliated to the Faculty of Medicine.
The academic staff of the department of Radiology is geared to keeping themselves updated with recent advancements andknowledge and are dedicated to teach Radiology to the undergraduate students and train postgraduate trainees on par to international standards.
The department functions with the aim of fostering a solid background in radiology for future doctors.
