- Exploring Science Beyond the Classroom: A Workshop for Peradeniya Central College Students by the Department of Parasitology
The Department of Parasitology recently conducted a comprehensive workshop for Advanced Level (A/L) science stream students of Peradeniya Central College, offering an engaging introduction to various areas of biomedical science. The program combined theoretical explanations with hands-on practical experiences to enhance students’ understanding of modern scientific techniques and concepts.
Students participated in interactive sessions on molecular biology, including practical demonstrations of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and gained hands-on experience in microscopy by examining tissues and microorganisms. They also explored the role of mosquitoes and other organisms in disease transmission, linking biological concepts to real-world applications along with other parasites.
The workshop concluded with a visit to the museum, where students observed a variety of snake specimens, connecting classroom knowledge to tangible biological diversity. Designed to be interactive and educational, the program encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and an appreciation for the interdisciplinary nature of biomedical sciences, providing students with valuable exposure beyond their school curriculum.
- Hands-On Science: Rasindev College Students Attend Medical Parasitology Workshop at University of Peradeniya
A school workshop was successfully conducted on the 20th of June 2025 for students of Grades 9, 10, and 11 from Rasindev College, Kandy. The event took place at the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya.
The workshop focused on several key areas of biological and medical relevance, including medically important parasites, microscopy, and snakes. The aim was to provide students with hands-on exposure and fundamental knowledge in these critical areas of study, enhancing their interest in science and health-related disciplines.
The workshop was both educational and interactive, allowing students to engage with university staff, ask questions, and gain practical insights beyond their school curriculum. It served as an inspiring and informative experience, potentially motivating students to pursue future studies in medical or biological sciences.
