Academic Staff
Prof. W.D.S.J. Wickramasinghe, PhD, is a leading Professor and Head of the Department of Parasitology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, where he directs academic programmes, parasitology research and postgraduate training in tropical and molecular parasitic diseases. His work spans molecular epidemiology, helminth genomics, cutaneous leishmaniasis and vector-borne disease surveillance, contributing to improved diagnostic and control strategies in Sri Lanka. Prof. Wickramasinghe publishes extensively and mentors students in experimental parasitology and public health research.
Prof. W.M.D.R. Iddawela, MBBS, PhD, is a respected Chair Professor of Parasitology in the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. She contributes extensively to teaching, research, and postgraduate supervision in parasitic diseases, epidemiology, and public health, encompassing studies on toxocariasis, leishmaniasis, soil-transmitted helminths, and toxoplasmosis in Sri Lankan populations. Her work enhances understanding of parasite-related health burdens, informs evidence-based control strategies, and strengthens clinical and community parasitology training. The department is a key academic unit for parasitic disease research, diagnostics, and education in Sri Lanka.
Dr. R.P. Morel, MBBS, Dip. Med. Micro., MD (Medical Parasitology), is a Senior Lecturer in Parasitology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, with extensive experience in teaching and research in parasitic and opportunistic infections. Her research focuses on Strongyloides stercoralis, Pneumocystis jiroveci and other protozoan infections in immunocompromised hosts, contributing to both clinical and community-oriented parasitology knowledge. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students, supports student welfare, and actively participates in departmental research programmes that strengthen diagnostics and disease control strategies.
Dr. D.N. Atapattu, MBBS, is a Senior Lecturer in Parasitology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, where she teaches medical undergraduates and contributes to community-focused parasitology education. Her research interests include cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sri Lanka, advancing understanding of parasitic disease patterns and clinical presentations. Dr. Atapattu participates in departmental research collaborations and supports postgraduate research training in parasitology and public health.
Dr. Sajanee Lenadora, is attached to the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. She obtained her MBBS degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya in 2020, graduating with second-class honours.
Following internship training in Medicine and Surgery at the District General Hospital, Matale, she served as a Relief House Officer in Haematology and COVID units and later as a medical officer at the Blood Bank, District General Hospital, Nuwara Eliya, gaining broad clinical and laboratory experience. Dr. Lenadora completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Microbiology from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, in 2025 and is currently pursuing MD in Medical Microbiology. Her academic and research interests include tropical diseases, parasitic infections, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention and control.
