Academic Staff
Prof. Keerthie Dissanayake (MBBS, MPhil, MSc (Human Assisted Reproduction and Embryology), PhD (Medicine), is a professor in Anatomy and current Head of the Department of Anatomy at Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. He currently serves as the Chairperson, Curriculum Coordinating Committee. His research interests include embryology, extracellular vesicles, and immunology. He is deeply involved in undergraduate teaching and give an invaluable contribution to the faculty and has become an integral part of the faculty’s journey toward excellence.
Senior Professor S.B. Adikari (MBBS, PhD) serves as the Chair Professor of the Department of Anatomy. He holds an MBBS and earned his Ph.D. in Neuroimmunology from the renowned Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
An active leader in his field, Professor Adikari is a past President of the Anatomical Society of Sri Lanka. His research spans the immunology of tropical diseases, anatomical variations of the human body, and medical education.
As a core academic, he teaches Human Anatomy and Immunology to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is deeply committed to educational outreach, having initiated and now coordinating the department's popular 'Workshop on Human Structure' for advanced-level biology students.
Professor Adikari is also a valued mentor, providing experienced counsel to students and supervision for their research projects. His career is distinguished by an unwavering dedication to teaching and commitment to academic excellence, making him an inspiring pillar of our academic community.
Dr. Jayampathy Kumari Dissanayake (MBBS, MPhil, PgDip), is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. She earned her MBBS with Second-Class Honours from the University of Peradeniya, followed by an MPhil focused on monogenic susceptibility and hormonal risk factors in breast cancer. She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Biotechnology and has completed a certificate course in clinical genetics. Dr. Dissanayake served as President of the Anatomical Society of Sri Lanka in 2025. She has chaired the Specialty Board in Anatomy at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine and has been a member of the Board of Studies in Basic Sciences. Her research spans several domains: anatomical variations and morphometric studies with applications in surgery, radiology and forensic medicine; clinical investigations into rheumatic diseases and genetic susceptibility in oncology; and interdisciplinary work in sports science, including athlete physiology and injury prevention. She teaches anatomy and medical genetics to undergraduate and postgraduate students across disciplines, including medicine, physiotherapy, Forensic Medicine, and biomedical sciences. She supervise student research projects across diverse fields, contributing to curriculum development, and serving on ethics committees. Recognized as a valued mentor and examiner, she is extensively involved in postgraduate education and participating in international conferences as a guest speaker. Through her teaching, research, and leadership, Dr. Dissanayake embodies a steadfast dedication to fostering excellence in anatomical education and research in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Himani Amaratunga (MBBS, MPhil, PhD), is a Senior Lecturer Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Peradeniya. Her research interests lie in Cartilage and Bone Disorders, Medical Education including Anatomy education. She held several key positions including Head Department of Anatomy and the Secretary of Anatomical Society of Sri Lanka. Her well rounded service, combining academic excellence with administrative and student centered initiatives is truly commendable.
Dr. Lakshika Pathirana (MBBS, MPhil), is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Peradeniya. With a special interest in Breast cancer molecular biology and Immunohistochemistry she has contributed meaningfully to advancing research in her field. Her commitment to education, research and institutional development is a valued asset to the faculty and the wider academic community.
Dr. Warunie Kosgallana, is an MBBS (2019) graduate with distinctions in Anatomy, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Parasitology, and Psychiatry. She completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Genetics from the Centre for Genetics and Genomics, University of Colombo. Her MPhil research focused on colorectal cancer with DNA mismatch repair deficiency, which was a multi-centre study aimed at developing a predictive tool for Sri Lankan patients. She teaches medical and allied health undergraduates, integrating her clinical background with a strong foundation in anatomical sciences. She also served as the assistant secretary to the Anatomical Society of Sri Lanka (2024/25).Her research interests include human anatomical variations, molecular pathology of colorectal cancer, medical education, and global health.
Dr. Jayamini Sri Jayarathna, is a lecturer in the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. She obtained her MBBS from the Faculry of Medicine and Allied Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (2015) with the 'Department of Community Medicine Gold Medal’ for Community Medicine, and completed her MPhil at Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka (2025) on "Anatomical variations of the biliary tract with the aid of cadaveric and autopsy dissections and radiological imaging modalities". Following completion of internship in medicine and general surgery, she worked in the fields of mental health and internal medicine at the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka (2016 - 2022), before joining the university as an academic. Her primary research and academic intersts include radiological and gross human anatomy, general medicine, medical education, and guidelines and monitoring system for Clozapine at Mental health clinics.
Dr. W.J.B.S.M.S. Jayawardana (MBBS), is a Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. She is currently pursuing an MPhil degree at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, with a study focusing on vascular function, specifically assessing endothelial dysfunction through brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD). Her broader research interests include maternal vascular health, cardiovascular risk assessment, anatomy education and clinico-anatomical correlations. She contributes to undergraduate teaching in anatomy and participates in academic development activities in addition to her collaborative research projects. She has presented her work at many scientific forums and continues to build her publication profile in the areas of clinical-anatomy and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
Dr. C.K.M. Rajapaksha, is a lecturer in the Department of Anatomy Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. She graduated with an MBBS degree from Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. She teaches undergraduate medical students, contributing to the delivery of core anatomical sciences and related biomedical content.
She is currently pursuing an MPhil degree at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, with research focused on genetics associated with congenital heart defects in Down syndrome.
Dr. Rajapaksha has completed selected professional development courses in anatomy, immunology, and statistics, and teaching in higher education, enhancing her teaching and research skills.
Her academic interests include medical education, clinical-anatomical correlation, and genetic determinants of developmental disorders. Dr. Rajapaksha is committed to excellence in teaching, mentoring students, and advancing research that bridges basic anatomical knowledge with clinical and genetic insights.
